An 18th century pastoral landscape in the style of renowned Welsh artist Richard Wilson RA (1714-1782). The scene depicts a thatched cottage nestled amongst verdant trees and rocky terrain, with a figure populating the foreground along a winding country track. The composition is anchored by dramatic trees, whilst billowing clouds and a distant town create atmospheric depth. The painting is well presented in an antique gilt frame with foliate moulding to the cove and wonderful patina. Unsigned. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age. The canvas has been previously relined. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration and overpainting. There is craquelure to the surface and areas of varnish discolouration. Light abrasion to the upper right and lower right corners. Age-related chips and moulding losses to the antique gilt frame. The overall condition of the artwork is good.
