This charming 19th century watercolour depicts people gathered around a table. The soft light of the fire illuminates the three figures who sew and talk into the night. The motif has a strong resemblance to the work of Dutch painter Joseph Israels who was renowned for capturing peasants and their struggles with a great sense of humility. This painting has many similarities to Israel's' work with its dark interiors and charismatic figures that have depth and substance in the stories they portray. Unsigned.
