Collection Information

Christopher Catlin (1902-1977) was a self-taught artist, who was born and lived in London, and commonly signed his works C. After attending elementary school he eventually became a taxi-cab driver. He favoured pastel and tempera and his subjects often included market scenes, with a special interest in people and their faces. His work brought him a circle of friends including notable figures such as Sir Charles Tennyson and C.V. Wedgewood, and artists Polly Hill Clark and Helen Stuart Weir. Catlin’s wife cleaned for the artist Orovida Pissarro and, in gratitude for the Catlin’s help and friendship, Orovida bought them a house in Fulham after selling one of her grandfather, Camille’s, pictures. Catlin was a member of RBA, showed at RA and in local independent exhibitions and had a solo show in Kensington Church Street shortly before he died. From a collection of portraits and caricatures we acquired, a few of which are dated 1969. Many are inscribed with abbreviations which presumably denote the locations in London where such characters were spotted, such as EUST. (Euston), S. KEN (South Kensington) and FUL. (Fulham).
