Description

A vibrant and humorous painting showing studies of two sculptures by the Swedish artist Bjørn Okholm Skaarup. The larger, reclining hippo adopts the sensuous pose of Ingres's celebrated painting, La grande odalisque. Native to Egypt and the Near East, the hippo becomes a whimsical translation of Ingres's earnest Orientalism. The portrait in the top right shows the sculpture Hippo Columbine. This agile hippo is dressed as Columbine, the late Renaissance Commedia dell'arte character. Her feminine grace complements the masculine Rhino Harlequin, and recalls Degas' Little Dancer of Fourteen Years as well as Walt Disney's Fantasia. The artist has signed to the lower left corner and the painting is presented in a fine, brushed gilt effect, ornate frame.

On canvas.
