Description

An atmospheric maritime scene depicting sailing vessels moored at a harbour, with the dramatic dark silhouette of boat sails dominating the right foreground. Smaller vessels are moored on the distant jetty, shrouded in grey morning mist. The composition employs loose, impressionistic brushwork to capture the quiet, contemplative mood of a working harbour at rest. Well presented in a handsome gilt frame and signed lower right, with the original artist's label verso. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Inspection under UV light reveals some previous restoration, but this is very minor. The frame has a fine patina of age. Overall, the artwork presents in very good condition for its age.

Artist Biography

Chris Huidekooper, also seen as Huidekoper, was a Dutch painter, watercolourist and draftsman. He was also a novelist and gave lectures on European architecture. Around 1893 he started working as an artist in the Netherlands and was a pupil of the famous painter and writer Jacobus (Jac) van Looy. The period from 1901 to 1909 was spent in various European countries (Italy, Germany and Spain) before he returned to Haarlem and later to Amsterdam. In 1925 Huidekooper travelled again to München and Verona. His range of subjects covered figure and nude figures, Christian religious representations, views of villages and landscape, still lifes and flowers, as well as portraits. He was a member of a 19th-century artist society in Amsterdam called Arti et Amicitiae, meaning Arts and Friendship.
