Artist Biography

Charlotte Ardizzone was a British painter known for her landscapes, interiors, and still life subjects, working in a traditional figurative style marked by fresh colour and a quiet domestic sensibility. Born in London in 1943, she was the niece of the celebrated illustrator and war artist Edward Ardizzone. Although she came from a well-known artistic family, she was determined to establish herself on her own terms and reportedly found the family name as much a hindrance as a help when she wanted her work judged on its own merits. She studied briefly at St Martin's School of Art in 1960 before moving to the Byam Shaw School of Art in 1961, completing her training there in 1969. She first exhibited at the Royal Academy in 1964 and began showing with the New English Art Club in 1975, of which she was elected a member the following year. She was also associated with the Royal West of England Academy. Her subjects ranged from London interiors and kitchen still lifes to sunlit landscapes from her travels in Italy, Greece, and France — she habitually painted wherever she went, carrying her materials with her. One reviewer described her distinctive palette as combining "gentle pastels and sizzling splashes of colour." Ardizzone had solo exhibitions at a number of leading London galleries, including Drian Galleries, Blond Fine Art, the Bohun Gallery, and the Curwen Gallery. Her work entered several public and institutional collections, among them the Nuffield Foundation, the National Gallery of Australia, Columbia University, and the National Gallery in Warsaw. She lived and worked in London for many years, later dividing her time between Norfolk and south-west France. She died in 2012, leaving a daughter, Emily.
