Marquetry (also spelled as marqueterie; from the French marqueter, to variegate) is the art and craft of applying pieces of veneer to a structure to form decorative patterns, designs or pictures. The word derives from a Middle French word meaning 'inlaid work'.

Charles Spindler was an Alsatian artist. He is best known for his sepia-toned paintings and marquetry—painted veneers applied to furniture or decorative objects—depicting symbolic medieval scenes or Alsatian villages and countryside.
Born on March 11, 1865 in Bœrsch, France, the artist was encouraged to pursue art by his uncle, the painter Louis Pierre Spindler. Spindler went on to study painting in Düsseldorf and glassmaking in Munich, where he met Martin Feuerstein. Spindler died on March 3, 1938 in Bœrsch, France.
Today, his works are in the collections of the Victoria & Albert Museum in London and the Strasbourg Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art, among others.
