Artist Biography

Charles Horsfall was a British portrait painter who was born in Germany. He is best known for his portrait of Earl Kitchener that is now in the National Portrait Gallery,

In 1893, he exhibited three pastel portraits at the Salon de Paris exhibition of the French Societe Nationale. After this, he moved to Berlin where he exhibited at the Berlin Grosse Kunstausstellung (Grand Art Exhibition) between 1893 and 1914. He also exhibited at the 1914 Salon de Paris in France and at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin, Ireland.

After the war Horsfall moved to Chelsea, London, with his German wife. During this time he appeared to be focusing on large abstract works that were inspired by spontaneity rather than subject matter. At this point he also started talking at and attend spiritual meetings where he met and befriended Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. His friendship with Doyle inspired several portraits that have now unfortunately been lost.
