Born in Hove, Sussex. Knight studied at Brighton School of Art, under Louis Ginnett and the RA Schools where he learned from Charles Sims. A prolific prizewinner he was awarded a gold medal, the Landseer Scholarship and portrait drawing prizes. He lived in Ditchling and taught at Brighton from 1925, returning after the war and eventually retired in the mid-1960’s.
At Brighton, Knight held the post of vice-principal from 1959 to 1967. He also worked for an architectural firm, J.L. Denman of Brighton, detailing perspective drawings. Knight executed forty drawings for the Pilgrim Trust's Recording Britain project in 1940 and also decorated railway carriages with panel paintings of Lancashire scenes.
His landscape style was more influenced by great artists of the past, such as Cotman, than any Impressionist or Post-Impressionist trends. He is best remembered for his watercolours which with their strong sense of design earned him the sobriquet 'the twentieth century Cotman'. Charles Knight also designed in signs, probably in conjunction with his colleague at the Brighton College of Art, J L Denman, who was the main architect to the Kemp Town Brewery. He was elected ROI, 1933, an Associate of the RWS, 1933 and a full member in 1935 and held the position of vice-president of that Society in 1961. Knight also showed with his local Society of Sussex Painters. His work is represented in several public collections, including Brighton Art Gallery, BM, Ferens Art Gallery, Sheffield Art Gallery, Tate, Towner Art Gallery and Worthing Art Gallery.
