Artist Biography
Charles Joshua Kelsey (1871-1960) was a London born son of a schoolmaster. He was an artist, painter and enameller based in Knowle near Bristol, England, and unusually began his working life as a qualified dental practitioner. He was elected a member of the Bristol Savages in 1906 after gaining local recognition for his artistic work.
Kelsey was a friend and patron of Samuel John 'Lamorna' Birch (1869-1955) who gave him lessons in Bristol, and later in Cornwall, and his work displays a clear influence of Birch and the artistic set of the period. Kelsey is recorded as exhibiting at the Royal Cambrian Academy.
