Painter, born in Edinburgh, Scotland. He began his working life as a lawyer, but on winning a scholarship in 1933, he studied at Edinburgh College of Art under S.J. Peploe and David Foggie and then in Paris under Achille-Emile Othon Friesz (1879-1949) at the Académie Colarossi. In 1938, he returned to Britain when he was awarded a two-year fellowship at the Edinburgh College of Art. In the same year, McCall began exhibiting at the Royal Academy, with the New English Art Club and the London Group. After service in World War II with the Royal Engineers working in the Camouflage Unit, he began to exhibit regularly. He was to hold solo exhibitions in Britain, at the Leicester Galleries and Belgrave Gallery and elsewhere. He also exhibited in the USA, Canada and Ireland. His best work is often intimate in scale and deals with domestic interiors and the urban scene. Elected ROI and NEAC, his work is in the collection of Paisley Art Gallery, York Museum, Government Art Collection, City of London Corporation, Maidstone Museum & Bentlif Art Gallery, Scottish Arts Council, Usher Gallery, the City of Edinburgh Art Collection and the Ruth Borchard Self-Portrait Collection.
