A charming 19th-century interior study depicting a child sitting in a dimly lit room with a puppy on her lap. Another small dog stands in the open doorway looking in on the scene. The artist employs an expert hand when depicting the light in the room, through rich shadows and softly lit pools of sunshine pouring in from the cottage windows. Signed and dated to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame with acanthus running pattern. On canvas.
Condition
The canvas has been relined. Evidence of light surface restoration can be seen under UV light. There is some craquelure to the surface. Light discolouration to areas of the varnish. Evidence of bitumen deterioration.
