The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration. With foxing visible across the sky area and two minor holes to the upper edge, as shown. There are a number of losses to the frame some of which have been filled and retouched.

Painter of horse, angling and animal pictures, born in Stockport, Cheshire who studied at the RA Schools. He is recorded as living in London by 1855 but within three years he had moved to Edinburgh. He returned to the capital in 1863 where he remained until 1897 before finally residing in Richmond, Surrey. A prolific exhibitor he showed at RA, RSA, GI, RBSA, FAS, Walker Art Gallery, Liverpool, RHA, RI, ROI and Arthur Tooth & Sons, London. He was an elected member of the ROI and ran a school for landscape painting in his final years. His work is in the collection of the Tate Gallery, London and at Hamilton, Australia.
