A charming watercolour by the artist Charles Edward Hannaford, depicting a calm landscape scene with a dramatic sunset reflecting on the river. The use of watercolour as a medium perfectly compliments Hannafords expressive yet detailed style, exquisitely portraying the atmosphere of the scene. Signed in the lower left hand corner and inscribed on the reverse, as shown. On wove laid to backing. Signed and incsribed on the reverse.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some general discolouration. Cleaned with a smoke sponge.

Artist Biography

Charles Edward Hannaford RBA (1863-1955) was a painter who studied at the Stanhope Forbes School of Painting in Newlyn and also in Paris. He painted scenes in Kent, Essex, Suffolk and Yorkshire and exhibited at the RBA of which he was elected a member in 1916. He also showed at the RA, RCamA, RI, MAFA and at the Walker's Gallery, Bond Street, London. He was the father of artist Charles Arthur Hannaford. Much of his work was reproduced as postcards particularly his views of Devon and Cornwall.
