Description

A finely detailed chromolithograph by Storch and Kramer after drawings by Cesare Mariannecci. The print reproduces Raphael's fresco in the Stanza della Segnatura in Vatican City. The personification of Theology sits on a cloud, dressed in a red, green, and white robe, the colours of the theological virtues of Charity, Hope, and Faith. On either side are two cherubs holding two-handled tablets with the inscription "divinar rer notitia" (knowledge of divine things). The Stanza della Segnatura was where the Holy See's highest court met and it was one of Raphael's earliest commissions. When he began in 1508, Michaelangelo had also recently begun work on the Sistine Chapel nearby. This lithograph was acquired alongside two companion prints from the same fresco cycle representing the personifications of Poetry and Philosophy, which are also listed (SU053 and SU050). Elegantly presented in a gilt-effect frame. Unsigned. On paper.

Condition

Slight discolouration. However, overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. Scratches and scuffs to the frame.
