This fine mid-19th century portrait depicts a refined gentleman of high standing. The subject wears a dark frock coat paired with a luxurious white satin waistcoat. A large, loosely tied black silk cravat adds a sense of relaxed elegance, while a high-collared white shirt frames the look. Altogether, his attire embodies the respectable and prosperous style of the early Victorian period. Unsigned. Beautifully presented in an antique birds-eye maple frame. Craquelure and light abrasions throughout. The artwork has been previously restored: the canvas has been repaired and relined with areas of corresponding overpainting visible under UV light.
