An atmospheric maritime scene in watercolour attributed to Charles Taylor (act.1841-1883). The vessel flies a red and white flag, identifying it as a pilot ship. A pilot boat draws alongside a ship so that a harbour pilot, who is an expert in local waters, can board to guide the ship safely into or out of port. Well presented in a black frame with gilt running patterns. Unsigned. On paper.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing to the paper. Some undulation to the paper. Marks and scuffs to the frame, as well as some small losses to the running patterns.
