Hubert Arthur Finney (1905-1991) oil on canvas. Brittany fishing boats moored in a harbour, with a prominent blue-hulled vessel in the foreground. The composition captures the quiet atmosphere of a working harbour with figures dotted along the quayside. The painting is well presented in a large gilt effect frame. Signed by the artist to the lower right. (Provenance: The artist's family).Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some soiling to the surface of the painting and discolouration to the varnish layer. Minor abrasion to the upper right hand corner. Small chips and scuffs to the gilt effect frame. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.

Artist Biography
Hugh Finney studied at the Royal College of Art under William Rothenstein. In 1929 after graduation he took up a travelling scholarship to Rome. In 1935 his painting Mother and Child was acquired by Carlisle Art Gallery. He taught part time at Reading University and was in charge of life drawing there until he retired in 1970. Although he was reclusive and reluctant to show his work, he did exhibit at the RA Summer Exhibition (in 1950 and 1954), the Portrait Society, and the Paris Salon. A large solo exhibition took place at the University of Oxford’s Institute of Education in 1964.
