Description

Circle of David Vinckboons (1576-1629). This remarkable 17th century oil painting depicts artists and traders in Dam Square, the booming commercial and political heart of Amsterdam's Golden Age. A statue of Mercury instantly grabs your gaze, positioned on a pedestal at the centre of the composition. In the 1600s, Mercury (Hermes) appeared prominently as a symbol of trade, commerce, and exchange in the Netherlands. A Dutch artist stands to the left, palette and paintbrush in hand, capturing all that unfolds. The building to the left possibly resembles the old town hall in Amsterdam. Figures crowd the landscape as far as the horizon in this bustling and most remarkable composition. The painting is well presented in an antique Dutch-style frame with a delicate gilt slip and ripple moulding. Unsigned. Affixed verso with an old label attributed to Vinckboons. On panel.

Condition

Signs of wear consistent with age. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of restoration and overpainting. Areas of craquelure have been previously consolidated. Minor abrasion to the perimeter of the panel caused by movement in the frame. Signs of wear to the dark frame to include small chips and wear to the finishing paint. The overall condition of the artwork is very good.
