Edmund Thornton Crawford (1806-1885) was a painter in oils and watercolour born in Cowden, near Dalkeith. He was apprenticed to a house-painter in Edinburgh, but after showing a talent for art entered the Trustees' Academy. His early efforts in art were exhibited in the Royal Institution, and his first contributions to the annual exhibition of the Royal Scottish Academy appeared in 1831. Although not one of the founders of the academy, Crawford was one of its earliest elected members. Examples of his work are held by the National Gallery of Scotland.
