Description

A truly wonderful 19th century drawing depicting a French officer of the 15th Pontonniers Artillery Regiment. The regiment was active from 1789 to 1800 during the French Revolution, and this work represents a mid 19th century historical reflection on that distinguished unit. The level of detail is exceptional: tiny stick-like figures can be seen constructing and riding in the distance, while anchors, boats, and horses are rendered with remarkable care. In the lower right, beneath the French flag, two soldiers sit at a picnic table, adding a charming, human touch to the scene.Dominating the foreground is a resplendent officer, Pierre Gerbault, presented in full finery as he surveys the activity before him, lending both authority and elegance to this richly detailed historical composition. The artwork is titled and inscribed top and bottom. Well presented in a fine wood frame. Dated 1853 in graphite to the far lower left corner. On paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing. There are some historic woodworm marks to the frame at the right hand corner. The frame has been fully treated for woodworm.
