A striking watercolour by Joseph Besnard (1834-1905), a French stained-glass artist, depicting a Renaissance soldier in vibrant military dress standing before a landscape with a flag in his hand. Signed to the lower left and inscribed "Chalon S/S" for Chalon-sur-Saône, where the artist maintained a workshop. Beautifully presented in an ornate gilt frame. On paper.Condition
Some discolouration and light foxing to the paper, however overall the condition is good for a picture of this age. Wear to the frame consistent with age., including cracking and losses to the running patterns, dirtying, and scuffs.

Artist Biography
Joseph Besnard (1834-1905) was a French stained-glass artist. He trained under Julien-Léopold Lobin, who ran a stained-glass workshop in Tours. Besnard would then settle in Toulouse, before moving to Chalon-sur-Saône in 1870, where he founded his own stained-glass workshop a year later. He completed many works for churches, predominantly in the Départements Côte-d'Or and Saône-et-Loire. He also participated in exhibitions in Lyon in 1872 and Mâcon in 1874, and exhibited at the Paris Salon in 1880 and 1881.
