Francis Sydney Unwin was a lithographer and etcher born in Dorset. He studied at Winchester School of Art and at the Slade. Between 1907-08, he travelled in Europe and North Africa where he made drawings of the interiors of Egyptian tombs for an American archaeological publication. During 1920 and 1921, he travelled to the Alps due to illness, where he made many studies of the mountains. He exhibited at the Adelphi Gallery and by 1924, he had staged his first solo exhibition at St. George's Gallery, London. Unwin was a member of the Arts League of Service, the Manchester Academy of Fine Arts, the New English Art Club, and was also a founder member of the Society of Artist Printmakers. His work is included in the collection of the Tate Gallery, British Museum, and Victoria and Albert Museum.
