Madeleine Flaschner was the daughter of painter Alexandre Flaschner (1903-1995). She began painting in Edouard Joseph Goerg's studio at La Grande Chaumière in 1950 and at the Beaux-Arts with Eugène Narbonne. Solidly trained in painting and engraving, she helped found "Pointe et Burin", an association of engravers, in Paris in 1956. During this period, she frequented the backstage area of the Médrano circus, where she succeeded in bringing to light the joyous, bohemian atmosphere of the world of show business. Flaschner's talent was broad and she was also able to capture more classical subjects such as nudes, portraits, landscapes (views of Paris), musicians, still life and interior scenes. She asserted her artistic independence and rejected academicism, which makes her a follower revisiting the Ecole de Paris of the 1960s, where Chaïm Soutine, Foujita, Amedeo Modigliani, Pascin and Krémègne gravitated. The Expressionist touch and colours used also reflect the influence of artists such as Schmidt Rotffluff, Munch, Kirchner, Heckel and Bleyl. The collection of works presented in this sale comes directly from Madeleine Flaschner's studio, and sheds new light on the vitality and originality of her work.
