Description

This accomplished oil study takes inspiration from what was once thought to be an original by Dutch painter Isaac van Ostade (1621-1649). However, after studies were conducted and the piece had been thoroughly cleaned by The National Gallery London, experts found that 'Inn by A Frozen River' was not by the renowned Haarlem painter at all, but by one of his contemporary followers. Therefore this painting is after a follower of Isaac van Ostade.

The scene shows figures gathering outside of a quaint inn. To the left of the composition men drag boats on the ice of the frozen lake towards the shore.

Label verso dates this copy to 1911/1912. Also inscribed is the paintings National Gallery number and name of the artist. Presented in an ornate gilt frame with pierced gilt mouldings and foliate details.

On canvas.
