Painter born in Glasgow who studied at Glasgow School of Art under Robert Greenlees and in Paris under William-Adolphe Bouguereau, (1825-1905) and Tony Robert-Fleury (1837-1911). The father of Gertrude Coventry, he lived in Glasgow and travelled abroad but painted principally fishing and harbour scenes on the east coast of Scotland. Coventry also painted in Belgium and Holland and exhibited at the RA, GI, AAS, RSW, NEAC, Dowdeswell's and the RSA. He was elected RSW in 1889 and an Associate of the RSA in 1906. Examples of his work are represented in Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, Glasgow, Kirkcaldy Art Gallery and Paisley Art Gallery.
