Description

This delightful landscape overlooks vast fields stretching to the horizon. As the sun sets in the distance, it casts soft shades of orange and purple over the winter scene, its light shining through the bare tree branches in the foreground. Signed with initials to the lower right. Presented in a gilt frame with a gold card mount. On paper.

Condition

there are some light surface marks to the top of the painting where the mount meets the picture. Some light wear ti the frame.

Artist Biography

Frederick William Jackson was a painter, born the son of a picture dealer and photographer near Oldham, Lancashire. Jackson studied at Manchester School of Art and later in Paris where he studied under Lefebvre and Gustave Boulanger, (1824-1888). In 1870 he joined the short-lived Manchester School of Painters and then worked for a time in Cornwall before relocating to Hinderwell, near Runswick Bay. There he joined and exhibited with the Staithes Group.

He also exhibited at the RA, ROI, NEAC, YUA and RBA the last two societies elected him as a member. Jackson was also a founder member of the Northern Art Workers' Guild and a member of The Arts Club, Dover Street. His work is held by the Leeds University Collection, Stockport Heritage Services, Kirkleatham Museum, Redcar, Pannett Art Gallery, Cartwright Hall Museum, Bolton Museum and Art Gallery, Manchester Art Gallery, York City Art Gallery, North Lincolnshire Museums, Herbert Art Gallery, Kirklees Museums and Galleries and Rochdale Art Gallery.


Jackson's two brothers were Vincent Jackson, a musician trained at Leipzig Conservatoire and Charles Arthur Jackson, an art dealer and Manchester gallery owner. Frederick W.Jackson died at Middleton near Rochdale.
