John Muirhead RSW RBA (1863-1927) was the lesser-known elder artist brother to David Thomson Muirhead ARA ARWS (1867-1930). Born in Edinburgh, he attended the Royal Scottish Academy Schools and favoured pastoral landscapes. He was elected a member of the Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour in 1892 and a member of the Royal Society of British Artists in 1904. He predominantly painted in watercolour and with oils less frequently. He showed at the Glasgow Institute of the Fine Arts, Royal Academy of Arts, Royal Society of British Artists, Royal Institute of Oil Painters, Royal Scottish Academy, Royal Scottish Society of Painters in Watercolour, Society of Scottish Artists, Walker Art Gallery, and at the 1912 Venice Biennale. Examples of his work are held in the collections of Berwick Museum, Dundee Art Gallery, and Perth and Kinross Council.
