In this evocative late 19th Century Victorian head study, the artist C. Marston has produced a fine portrait with an intriguing gaze. Full of character, and somewhat melancholic, the position of the sitter is reminiscent of the style and form of the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood. The subject also has an Italian look about her. This work has likely been taken from a larger portrait, and could be hung without a frame. Signed. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and craquelure. There are some very small paint losses to the left and right edges. Some general surface scuffing and light marks. Inspection under UV light reveals no restoration.
