A striking portrait of an Guatemalan elder acquired directly from the estate of Charles Conway Plumbe (1881-1962). The subtle use of impasto and vivid colour palette beautifully captures the character of the sitter. Well presented in a gilt effect modern frame. Inscribed on the reverse. Signed and dated. Artist Biography
Conway Plumbe (1881-1962) was born on 18 April 1881 in Mansfield, Nottinghamshire. The 1901 Census records reveal that he became an apprentice electrical engineer before graduating from the University of London with a B.Sc. Eng. Honours degree. Conway later joined the Civil Service working for the Home Office. Despite his busy working life Plumbe was a keen poet and painter. He had a number of paintings accepted by the Royal Academy and his work also appeared at The Sheffield Society of Arts Exhibition in November 1927. Plumbe also gave a number of BBC broadcasts around the issue of factory safety and was heavily involved in social concerns of the period.
