Sulis Fine Art is pleased to present this stunning late Victorian oil painting by the highly acclaimed English painted C.E. Gordon Stuart (fl. 1892-1896)
Depicting a Cornish fishing family in their terraced house, the artist has expertly captured the everyday lives of his sitters. The mother has returned from hanging clothes on the communal washing line (we can see other woman doing the same in the background), to find her two young children happily playing with marbles. The hung washing is a clever tool used by the artist - the movement in the fabric tells a story of a windy, coastal English day. The composition is an excellent depiction of Victorian life, where most people lived in terrace houses with communal back gardens where the children could play together, and adults socialise over their chores.
The present piece is a beautiful example of C.E. Gordon Stuart's oeuvre. Specialising in genre paintings, Stuart sought to depict the everyday life of his subjects, often against the backdrop of Victorian homes and gardens. A similar example of this is his painting 'Scandal', which was offered at auction in Norway in 2011, in which two figures are seen having a heated exchange in their stepped garden. Another fine example is 'A Wood Turner's Workshop' which was offered at auction in Cornwall in 2004.
This piece is presented in a superb, highly decorative gilt frame with scrolling leaf and berry decoration - the appearance is exceptional. There is a Kent framers label to the reverse.
Signed and dated. On canvas on stretchers.Inspection under UV light shows some scattered retouchings to the background and childrens' clothes. There is no apparent retouching to the faces of the sitters. The painting appears to have been cleaned at some point. Overall the appearance is very good. The painting has been relined. The frame is in superb condition.
