A very fine oil portrait of a woman in a 14th Century, linen headdress. The artist has captured a distant look in the sitter's eyes and a pursed, tense mouth. The warmth of the light and palette gives the sitter's skin a glow as though lit by candlelight. The artist shoes clear skill in the delicate rendering of the facial features, in particular, the eyes.
The artist has signed to the lower right corner and there is a plaque at the bottom of the frame with the artist's name. The painting has been presented in a dark wood frame with glazing and a gilt inner window.
On wove laid to board.The painting has a small area of paint loss by the signature and has some discolouration and dirtying to the surface. The frame has dirtying to the surface and general scratching and scuffing. There is a small loss to the upper left corner and chips to the gilt inner window at the lower edge.
