c. 1860 Oil - The Young Scholar
Description
Sulis is proud to present this charming late 19th Century portrait of a bright eyed, rosy cheeked young school boy. The sitter is wearing the crisp white collared shirt and blue tie, typical for young scholars during the 1860s-70s. The boy holds a book under his arm, as if he has just come from class, or is prepared for study. The rosy cheeks and gentle smile of the boy holds infinite youth and charm.
This portrait has been executed with wonderful skill, using the soft brushwork to create gentle curves and youthful skin in the boy's face. The muted palette suggests a serious tone to the painting, which is wonderfully balanced with the youthful blush in the boy's cheeks. The painting is unsigned and presented in a contemporary gilt effect frame with swept rail and corners and foliate strapwork.
On canvas.Condition
The canvas has been relined. There is some craquelure, mild surface dirt, and an indentation measuring 1.3cm to the lower-right quadrant. There is a crease to the canvas at the right edge. The frame has general surface dirt but is in otherwise fine condition.
