Brian Midlane was a 20th-century Australian expressionist, predominantly focusing upon portraiture and cityscapes. Often raw, his works capture subdued beauties in a silent and pure manner. Unappreciated in Australia, Brian and his wife, Mollie Paxton, sought success in London, where their work was widely exhibited and sold.
He was the runner up for the Archibald Prize in 1946 and has sold at various established auction houses across the UK, including Christie's and Bonhams. Whilst undervalued in Australia, he did exhibit at the Art Gallery of New South Wales in the 1940s. Alongside this fine expressive collection, we are also proud to present as small collection of works by his wife, the artist Mollie Paxton. This can be found on our artist page.
