Brian Chugg was a painter and writer born in Braunton, Devon. He studied at Bideford School of Art from 1946 to 1949 and at Camberwell School of Arts & Crafts from 1949 to 1950. During the period from 1953 to 1979, he taught at North Devon College as an Art Lecturer. In 1953, he was given a retrospective exhibition at Barnstaple Museum and Art Gallery, Woodstock Gallery and Piccadilly Gallery, and he also exhibited at the RBA, Leicester Galleries and the Piccadilly Gallery. After gaining architectural experience from 1944 to 1946, Chugg lectured in art at North Devon College from 1953 to 1979.
A posthumous exhibition of his work was held at the Museum of North Devon, The Square, Barnstaple in 2004. This show was inspired entirely by a particular area of the North Devon coastline at Saunton. All profits were in aid of Devon Wildlife Trust. The paintings and drawings in this exhibition were made between 1956 and 1966. Examples of his work are in Bideford Art Gallery, Devon.
