This delightful mid-19th century portrait depicts a smiling young woman of the Biedermeier era. She wears a rich burgundy dress with an intricate white lace collar, fastened at the neck with a pearl brooch and complemented by matching drop earrings. Her dark hair is swept back in a style typical of the period, pinned neatly with a velvet bow. Signed 'C.B' to the lower right. Beautifully presented in a distressed gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.
Condition
Fine craquelure and light abrasions throughout. Inspection under UV light reveals no apparent restoration. Overall the artwork is in very good condition for its age. Some wear to the frame, including scuffs, chips and a slight separation to the mitre joints. Signs of historic woodworm present to the reverse, however this has been fully treated and the wood is pest-free.
