Berenger Benger (1868-1935) - Early 20th Century Watercolour Charleston Farm

Description

A fine early 20th Century watercolour depiction of the renowned home of the Bloomsbury Group, Charleston. The view is from the back of the property with the farm outbuildings and haystacks to the right and the chimneys and red roof of the infamous house to the left. The artist has signed to the lower right and inscribed the location to the reverse. On watercolour paper.

Condition

The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration, particularly around the outer edges.

Artist Biography

Benger was a painter born in Tetbury, Gloucestershire, the son of landscape painter William Edmund Berenger (1841-1915). He studied in Antwerp under Verlat and travelled extensively in Europe, the USA, and South Africa. He was elected RBA in 1927 and showed at RA, RI, RCamA and at Liverpool's Walker Art Gallery. He also showed at the Brighton Art Gallery who in 1927 purchased one of his watercolours.
