The 'Pantheon Charivarique' (Grotesque Pantheon) was a series of satirical lithographs by Benjamin Roubaud (1811-1847) published in 'Le Charivari' that mocked prominent French writers, artists, and public figures of the time. Here, Roubaud targets the author Victor Hugo (1802-1885). He is depicted as literally big headed, propped atop representations of his achievements. He leans back on Notre Dame, referencing 'The Hunchback of Notre Dame,' which earnt him his initial success. Its main criticism, however, is that despite his revolutionary Romantic stance and talent he is still thoroughly bourgeois, with a box labelled "rentes" or "private income" overflowing at his feet. The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and foxing to the paper. Crease line horizontally across the centre. Light wear to the frame.
