A very fine late 19th century watercolour landscape from Basil Holmes, depicting cattle watering at the river's edge. This rural countryside scene is typical of Holmes's work, as he regularly depicted scenes of Kent and the South of England in his slightly stylized approach. Holmes was the Secretary to the Metropolitan Public Gardens Association, and it is likely that he painted for pleasure in his spare time, along with his wife Isabella Holmes, who was also a keen watercolourist. This fine painting has been well presented in a gilt frame decorated with raised pyramid moulding and gold slip. Signed. On wove.
Condition
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some discolouration and areas of minor foxing. The frame has suffered a few very minor marks and losses to a minor area of moulding to the upper edge. Otherwise in fine condition.
