Barbara Valentine RMS - Oil Miniature Lilies and Sevres, Bleu Celeste

Description

A beautiful contemporary miniature with an arched upper edge, depicting pink lilies in a Sevres porcelain vase in the shade bleu celeste. A key lies on the table beside the vase which is decorated with a harp-playing putto. In 17th-century Dutch still life paintings keys could symbolise the power and influence of the housewife, while lilies are commonly taken to symbolise purity and devotion. Presented glazed in a cream mount and a gilt-effect wooden frame. The artist's monogram is inscribed within the painting as if etched on the left side of the table. Artist's label to the verso which includes the title. On a porcelain-like substrate.

Artist Biography

Barbara Valentine RMS is an internationally renowned and award-winning miniature painter. She has featured in several books on miniature painting and regularly exhibits work in London and the USA.

She trained at Goldsmiths College, School of Art, London, and today is one of only a handful of miniature painting tutors in the country, holding classes in Mountfield, East Sussex. She is a member of the Royal Society of Miniature Painters, Sculptors, and Gravers.
