B. Simon - Signed & Framed 1999 Acrylic Sweat Lodge
Description
Native American woman sits around a small hut as spirits fog a deep blue sky during a purification ceremony, also known as a sweat. The sweat is intended as a religious ceremony, with its purpose being for prayer and healing.
Every aspect of a sweat lodge ceremony, from the construction of the lodge itself to the prayers offered, is imbued with deeply spiritual symbolism. The shape of the lodge is intended to represent the womb of the Earth, which renews and purifies those within it.
The painting shoes women, thick with contemplation, exciting the lodge whilst the spirit-laden smokes spill into the sky.
The painting has been finished in an impressionistic manner, mirroring the surreal atmosphere of the experience. The deep blue frame quietly harmonises and resonates with the entrancing hues of the painting's palette.
The artwork is also signed, dated and inscribed in the bottom right-hand corner.
