A characterful mid-nineteenth-century genre scene by Belgian painter August De Wilde (1819-1886). The scene depicts an elderly couple in a rustic cottage interior. Exhausted after their day's work, both have closed their eyes for a nap following their evening meal. De Wilde fills the composition with small details that lend depth and character, including two cats playing beneath the chair, various pots and vessels, and a spinning wheel set to one side. Signed and dated to the lower left. Well presented in a black frame with a gilt inner edge.
Condition
Signs of wear consistent with age including discolouration and craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals areas of overpainting. Marks and scuffs to the frame. Overall, the artwork is in good condition for its age and the piece presents well.
