Artist Biography

Peter Anthony Froste was a British painter and illustrator, best known for his archaeological reconstruction paintings of Roman Britain. Born in 1935, he went to school in Braintree, Essex, beginning an association with the county that lasted the rest of his life. His career as an archaeological artist began by chance. In 1971 he joined the excavation at Lion Walk in Colchester as a volunteer digger; Philip Crummy, later director of the Colchester Archaeological Trust, noticed his ability and asked him to sketch the site so that onlookers could picture what the archaeologists were uncovering. That request led to a fifty-year working relationship with the town. As a freelance artist and illustrator, Froste produced dozens of drawings and paintings reconstructing Colchester's Roman and medieval past from excavated evidence. He worked for institutions well beyond Essex. His oil paintings of pre-Roman Verlamion and of a Romano-British funeral at Turners Hall Farm are held by Verulamium Museum in St Albans; he produced a series of views of Roman Sandy for Sandy Town Council in 1997; and in 1996 he illustrated Roman London for what is now Museum of London Archaeology, a work displayed at the Billingsgate Roman House and Baths. His painting "Colchester Castle under Construction" is in the Colchester and Ipswich Museum Service collection. Much of his work is displayed at the Roman Circus Visitor Centre in Colchester, which stands on the site of the only Roman chariot-racing track known in Britain. An exhibition of his paintings, "Reconstructing the Past", was mounted there in 2018 and included a full-size modern circus mosaic of his design. Provenance: From the studio sale of the artist's work.
