A Falmouth born Cornish Bard, whose Bardic name 'Carer Gwyth' or 'Lover of Trees' demonstrates his concern for all things natural. He attended both Redruth School of Art and Falmouth School of Art during the years of World War I. He worked for many years outdoors as a gardener and honed his ability to depict both nature and street scenes of Falmouth and the Cornish countryside. Sadly blindness prohibited him from painting and drawing for the last ten years of his life, but he had been an habitual contributor to the annual exhibitions of art societies in Falmouth and environs. In 1984 he was the subject of a solo retrospective exhibition at Falmouth Art Gallery. His work was included in A Century of Art in Cornwall 1889–1989 an exhibition held at the Newlyn Orion Gallery, 1989. A portrait of Martin in Bardic robes by A. Handley is in the collection of Falmouth Art Gallery.
