Description

Figures stand within a grand interior, golden light streaming through the windows to illuminate the ornate doorway, wooden panelling and gold picture frame. Tintoretto's 'Mercury and the Graces' hangs on the wall, identifying the setting as the Sala dell'Anticollegio in the Doge's Palace in Venice. The Sala dell'Anticollegio served as a waiting room for those awaiting audience with the Serenissima Signoria. Four allegorical works by Tintoretto adorned its walls: 'Mercury and the Graces', 'Pallas Dispels Mars', 'Ariadne Found by Bacchus', and 'Vulcan's Forge'. These paintings allude to prosperity, harmony, and the four elements, whilst also symbolising the wise and prudent governance of the Republic. Well presented in an ornate gilt frame. On canvas on stretchers.

Condition

Overall, the condition is good for a picture of this age. The artwork has undergone restorative work, including relining and areas of overpainting. Slight discolouration. Scuffs and small losses to the frame.
