A charming late 19th Century rural scene in watercolour attributed to the esteemed Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly (1822-1900). The scene shows a horse and cart with its driver, making their way along a dirt path between some trees, towards a thatched cottage in the distance. A group of little black piglets graze in the grass to the right. The scene has a dignified bucolic idealism, with the sun dappling the tree tops and the quiet rural life marching on under a blue sky. There is some discolouration. There is an area of abrasion to the surface in the centre of the image, and a crude tear repair to the upper edge.

Artist Biography
Major-General Sir Charles Walters D'Oyly, 9th Baronet (1822–1900), his eldest son. Entered the Bengal Army and served as Aide-de-Camp to the Governor-General from 1851 to 1856; he served in the Gwalior Campaign and the Indian Rebellion of 1857 before retiring in 1875. He married twice; firstly to Emily Jane Nott, daughter of Major-General George Nott; secondly to Elinor Scott, daughter of James Winter Scott.
