A very fine, original 19th century river landscape attributed to the English artist Samuel Bough. Bough was known for his ability to capture the fleeting effects of weather and the changing seasons. His painting of Cadzow Forest in South Lanarkshire, is a fine example of this.
In this particular composition the artist has depicted a sunlit river landscape with lush greenery lining either side of the river bank. The masterful brushwork and control of light indicates that the artist was highly competent, with a flair for landscapes.
This delightful scene is excellently presented in a fine gilt cassette frame. Inscribed faintly on the reverse 'Sam Bough 1822-1878'. Also with a fragment of a label from Roberson & Miller, Art suppliers. The label was in circulation from 1833 onwards. Painted on millboard.
The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor discolouration. There are areas of light craquelure. Inspection under UV light reveals no sign of restoration. There are minor marks to the frame. With a small loss to the corners of the mount.

Samuel Bough RSA (1822-1878) was an English-born landscape painter who spent much of his career working in Scotland. He was self-taught but mixed with local artists such as Richard Harrington and George Sheffield, and was strongly influenced by the work of Turner. Bough became one of the most influential figures in the development of nineteenth-century Scottish landscape painting. He spent the early part of his career in Manchester and Glasgow painting scenes for theatrical sets. Bough later dedicated himself to landscape painting. Bough enjoyed tremendous popularity as an artist. His views of rivers and ports of the 1850s and 1860s show his masterful combination of realism and expressive colouring to capture natural effects.
