The condition is typical for a picture of this age including some minor foxing and discolouration. There are two pinholes to the mount on each side. Some slight dirt trapped beneath the glazing and small scuffs to the frame. Overall in good condition.

Goff was an etcher and painter who was born in Ireland, became a professional soldier from the age of eighteen, and fought in the Crimean War. He retired from the Coldstream Guards as a Colonel in 1878 to devote himself to art, becoming a widely respected printmaker and painter specialising in topographical views of Europe. He was an early member of the Brighton Art Club and exhibited at the RA, RE, RBA, RI, V&A and BM. Examples of his work are in the collections of the Ashmolean, BM, Hove Museum & Art Gallery, Bristol City Museum and Art Gallery, Hunterian and the V&A.
