Ralph Longstaff was born in Paris, France, in 1880, and died in Southwick, England, in 1967. He was a painter who worked in both England and Australia. He was the first child of the celebrated Australian painter Sir John Longstaff and his wife Rosa Louisa (known as Topsy). Mother and infant Ralph served as the inspiration for his father's painting 'Mère et Son Enfant', which received a 'mention honorable' at the Paris Salon of 1891. Sir John Longstaff carried the financial burden of supporting his wife and children in England, where they had chosen to remain. Ralph grew up in this Anglo-Australian artistic milieu, shaped by his father's distinguished career as a portraitist and war artist. A portrait of Ralph Longstaff in uniform was painted by the artist Douglas Stannus Gray (1890-1959).
