A highly interesting watercolour sketch attributed to Captain John Carlisle depicting Queen Victoria with her close friend and attendant John Brown, (the exact nature of his relationship with Victoria was the subject of great speculation by contemporaries and continues to be controversial today). The pair are portrayed in a vast landscape, the Queen riding her favourite horse, with Brown leading her through the Scottish Highlands, probably close to the Queen's estate of Balmoral. The inscription on the reverse which reads 'sketch by Captain John Carlisle', could refer to the British Watercolourist John Carlisle (fl.1866-1916). Carlisle is known to have painted views in Devon, Wales, and the Scottish highlands. He exhibited widely including sixty-two paintings at the Walker Gallery in London.
